Yeah, don't go - you'll get mugged outside of a resort

An ex bird went and said she was constantly pestered by lookie, lookie men on the beach, said one offered to take her back to her hut and give her some luvving!

Come to think of it, things were never quite the same after that.

Step 13 of Zoltaneering: Get your accommodation sorted already. And then post a thread letting people know you're going to a Carribean island

You are a fucking moron and I hope you don't get a female who is accompanying you raped.

Im being kind here in telling you that you picked the WRONG place to try and do on your own and not in a resort and not all inclusive. Stop being a fucking moron and realize you are going somewhere similar to Kingston, Jamaica and then plan appropriately. St Lucia is GHETTO.

Re: St Lucia advice
Albeit he's put it across in his own inimitable style, ILPDC has a point.

It's a great place for an all inclusive holiday in a resort, with a private (patrolled) beach and organised excursions.

It's not a great place to go off piste.

Re: St Lucia advice
I've been to most of the Caribbean islands & even owned a wonderful villa in Tobago for 12years, eventually planning to retire there

However, in those 12years I saw what was an island paradise full of friendly, welcoming & pleasant people turn into a dangerous, drug infested ghetto, with unpleasant, unfriendly people full of race hatred

In the end, I slept with a massive cutlass under my bed & carried a large cutlass around under the drivers seat of my car. I was lucky enough to sell my villa before making a loss on it

Most of the gangsters have relatives in the police force (if you can call it that because they never catch anyone for the frequent murders & rapes that take place)

The police force & the politicians are riddled with corruption, many having their hands in the lucrative drug trade (Think Jack Warner x10)

The press often suppress or simply do not report serious crime

It's such a shame for such a fate to befall such a beautiful place. The same has happened in many of the Caribbean islands, including St.Lucia

Nowadays, there is a very real danger of being mugged, shot, chopped or murdered or your woman companion being violently multiply raped (AIDS is rife in the West Indies) even without travelling too far off the beaten track

The only island that is relatively safe these days is Barbados (even though that is not without serious incidents). Personally, I've never liked Barbados as it's fully of classless, wealthy British ex-pats & all a bit Costa-del-Caribbean for my taste ~ all a bit to touristy for me!

My best advice would be to steer well clear of the Caribbean & definitely don't take a woman there!

Re: St Lucia advice
So apart from the rapes murders and mugging it is a great place to go ?

The Pitons are nice. Did a catamaran trip out to them which was worthwhile but from what I've read on here I am glad we didn't stray onto dry land.

I know shortly before we went that a coach of tourists from a cruise ship were robbed at gunpoint (I think).

Re: St Lucia advice
ILPDC - Jamaica is just as bad.

As others have said, for St Lucia you really want to be in a resort. Grenada is a better bet if you're not

Re: St Lucia advice
Joe C ~ Think that's pretty sound advice & you're correct in saying that Granada is safer than St Lucia at the moment

However, much as I personally hate gated resorts, that's probably the best bet for most of the islands, sadly the way things are at the moment!

Re: St Lucia advice
I'm not normally a fan of gated resorts either, but did one in Grenada last year and it was really nice (was pretty new mind) - however, did also go out to explore the island and had chosen Grenada specifically because it was a dafe one to do so

Re: St Lucia advice
done Antigua last year ,found it pretty laid back and no problems going around the island , doing Grenada this year for the cricket and don't really anticipate any problems , mind ive not done St Lucia .

Re: St Lucia advice
You go fully inclusive son and behave yourself , Barbados is the best island . 18 30 boozer it ain't , should be for romance and sea sports . The Brits have probably fucked it up . Keep your head down and enjoy your fully inclusive resort , relax and enjoy st Lucia , it's gorgeous, the right people will love you .

Re: St Lucia advice
Stayed in Rodney Bay a few years ago and the resort was fine. Avoided Castries in the evening but had no problems during the day. Good market and some very friendly bars. Grenada is so much better though. Travelled freely all over the island with never a hint of trouble. Fantastic island, looking to return this year. The only place I would never venture to again is Jamaica. Hated the whole place and was restricted to a gated resort which could have been anywhere. Went to Bob Marleys house and was lucky to return back. Never again.
